In an effort to promote sustainable transportation and enhance community health, the city of Hayward has launched an ambitious program to distribute 2,000 free bicycles to residents by the end of 2026. This initiative, known as Hayward Rides, is a collaborative effort between the city, Bike East Bay, and the Eden Youth and Family Center, funded through a grant from the California Air Resources Board.
The program primarily targets high school students and lower-income residents, providing them with entry-level urban mountain bikes. Additionally, a selection of e-bikes is available for adults. Each recipient receives a comprehensive package that includes a helmet, front and rear lights, a lock, a repair kit, and access to bicycle safety classes.
The initial distribution phases have been successful, with over 200 bikes already given out. The first batch was distributed around Halloween, and the second batch coincided with the Eden Youth and Family Center’s holiday toy giveaway on December 13. The city remains committed to reaching its goal of 2,000 bicycles distributed by the end of 2026, aiming to foster a more active and environmentally conscious community.
For more information on the Hayward Rides program and upcoming distribution events, residents are encouraged to visit the city’s official website or contact the Eden Youth and Family Center directly.
